Hate crimes at schools on the rise

New York Teacher

A new U.S. Department of Justice report found that hate crimes at schools, colleges and universities steadily increased from a pandemic low in 2020 to 2022, the latest year for which data is available.

Schools became the third most common location for reported hate crimes in 2022. That year, 10% of all reported hate crimes had occurred at schools and more than 30% of juvenile hate-crime victims experienced the offense at school, the report found.

More than 4,300 hate crimes were reported in schools, colleges and universities from 2018 to 2022. According to the FBI data, 700 hate crimes occurred in schools in 2018, 911 in 2019, 500 in 2020, 896 in 2021 and 1,336 in 2022.

During that five-year period, the most common bias type at schools was anti-Black (1,690 offenses), followed by anti-LGBTQ (901) and anti-Jewish (745), the FBI found. Intimidation, destruction/damage/vandalism and simple assault were the most frequently reported offenses in schools.
