After four years of organizing fueled by concerns over job security, pay and transparency in employment policies, hundreds of Metropolitan Museum of Art employees in January approved forming a union through the United Auto Workers.
UAW Local 2110 will represent staff members from more than 50 departments, including conservators, curators, librarians, archivists, digital and information technology workers and others. Seventy-six percent of eligible employees voted yes, with 100 votes still in dispute over membership eligibility. The National Labor Relations Board oversaw the election and announced results on Jan. 16.
In the past six years, employees at cultural institutions and museums across the country have been part of a growing unionization movement. UAW Local 2110 also represents staff at other New York City museums, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
“We won because we were able to convince our colleagues that they don’t have to accept whatever is offered to them, that their experience and hard work have earned them a seat at the table,” Rebecca Capua, a conservator at the museum for 16 years, said in a statement.
Local 2110 joins two existing unions that represent hundreds of other Metropolitan Museum of Art workers, including security staff.
