WNBA players approve 7-year labor deal

New York Teacher

WNBA players unanimously approved a new seven-year WNBA collective bargaining agreement that was ratified by the WNBA Board of Governors on March 24. The contract begins this season and runs through 2032.

In a statement, the Women’s National Basketball Players Association said that the contract “builds a stronger foundation for today’s players, the next generation and those who helped build the WNBA. It affirms the strength of our union and the power of our collective voice.”

More than 90% of the players voted on the collective bargaining agreement, which increases player compensation, offers bonus money for teams and players, adjusts salary caps and provides for growth in maximum salaries. It also includes changes to roster sizes and team staffing requirements; increases the number of games per season; and provides enhanced retirement benefits. Average salaries for 2026 are expected to be $583,000, increasing to $1 million by 2032.

The timing of the vote and ratification left teams little time to prepare for the start of the regular season on May 8. Before training camp starts, two new teams — Toronto and Portland — have to build their roster, and more than 100 free agents whose deals expired last year need to decide where they’ll play.
