BERS to TRS transfers

New York Teacher

UFT members who are currently enrolled in the Board of Education Retirement System have the option to transfer into the Teachers’ Retirement System, under a new state law signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul.

BERS-enrolled members have until Dec. 10, 2025, to request a transfer.

A decision to transfer to TRS is irrevocable, so it’s important that you understand how a transfer may affect you. BERS and TRS have similar but not identical pension plans, so you may be required to make additional contributions when transferring to TRS.

If you are considering or have already begun a transfer, visit the union’s updated FAQ, which includes a comparison of the two plans.

Please attend a BERS transfer workshop offered by the UFT Pension Department before applying for a transfer. The UFT will hold another round of workshops in the fall. Keep an eye out for your email invitation with session dates.
