The UFT's Women’s Rights Committee seeks to to promote women's involvement and role in the labor movement, women's history, and women's rights here and abroad. To that end, the committee hosts two programs annually, including a workshop in March in honor of Women's History Month. In the past, we have collaborated at our events with the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) and the union's Jewish Heritage Committee; we look forward to continuing our partnerships with them and to finding additional new partners who share our interests and aims.
Topics discussed at our workshops have included women in the labor movement, women in the workplace, nontraditional employment for women, pay equity, sexual harassment, and other topics of interest or concern to our members. Prominent past speakers have included New York Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez and CLUW's executive director, Gloria Johnson.
We have also organized trips to Seneca Falls, New York, arguably the birthplace of the modern women's rights movement.
The committee engages in an ongoing recruitment process involving new teachers, regular teachers, support staff, retirees, and other trade unionists who can offer their experience and expertise in the area of women’s rights. Non-UFTers, including university employees and members of unions affiliated with the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, NYSUT, or AFT may serve as associate members.
