The UFT team, led by UFT safety representative Susan Perez (front, second from right) and UFT Vice President Janella Hinds (front, right), set off on the walk through Central Park.

A UFT team of about 40 people walked in Central Park on Oct. 23 to raise money for CaringKind, a group that provides care and support services for individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementias. This is the third year the UFT participated in the fundraiser after getting involved at the urging of Susan Perez, the Victim Support Program coordinator in the Bronx, who lost her mom to the disease three years ago. “A lot of our members are caregivers of family members who are going through dementia,” said Perez, the co-captain of the UFT team. She personnally received a lot of help from CaringKind, starting with a workshop when her mother was first diagnosed. CaringKind offers webinars, livestream events, ideas for creative at-home activities and a safety program for those who wander, among other things. Co-captain Janella Hinds, the union’s vice president for academic high schools, said CaringKind was a great resource to ensure that her father, UFT retiree Edwin Hinds, who died in January 2022, got the assistance he needed in his final years. The CaringKind Helpline number is 646-744-2900.
