UFT Night at Citi Field Mets

Some of the 1,400 UFT members and guests who attended the Mets game on UFT Night cheer as they are shown on the jumbotron at Citi Field.

UFT member Rose Zelwinder stepped onto the pitcher’s mound at Citi Field — not to play for the New York Mets, but to throw out the ceremonial first pitch on UFT Night, prior to the game against the Chicago White Sox on May 27. “I was definitely nervous — I last played on a softball team 50 years ago,” said Zelwinder, who teaches at PS 78 in Queens. While a UFT contingent of 1,400 looked on from in front of the outfield fence, Zelwinder threw to Monica Lalo, who teaches at IS 96 in Brooklyn. “Just like in the classroom, things don’t go exactly as planned,” said Lalo, who dug the low toss out of the dirt. “In teaching and sports, it’s all about adapting.” UFT District 21 Representive Adam Shapiro, who organized the event, was thrilled with its success — as well as the 6-4 Mets victory. “The looks on these two members’ faces as the gates opened and they stepped onto a real MLB field was priceless,” he said.
