NX grading policies for the 2020-21 school year

DOE policy states that “students must achieve mastery” and/or “achieve learning outcomes” to receive a passing grade. If not, they will receive an NX.

The teacher’s role in assigning grades has not changed. There are, however, two different types of students who would receive an NX grade: those who have shown engagement throughout the year, and those who have not.

During this year of remote/hybrid learning, engagement can take many forms, including but not limited to: completing asynchronous assignments, attending class via Zoom or other video conference platform, communicating with the teacher (you) via phone or email, and attending class in person.

Here are the two different situations in which students would receive an NX and the differences in paths forward when working to receive the course credit.

Lack of Mastery/Learning Outcomes

A student who has been engaged over the course of the year but has not yet mastered the core skills of your class, would receive an NX.

A student's next steps would be to complete a program approved at the school level to demonstrate sufficient mastery of the standards in order to receive a passing grade.

Lack of Engagement and Mastery/Learning Outcomes

A student who did not engage in the class in any way during the 2020-21 school year would receive an NX.

A student must meet all credit requirements and demonstrate sufficient mastery of the standards in order to receive a passing grade for the class.

Completion of packets or any other programs that fall short of the requirements for a full curriculum cannot result in a passing grade.

NX grades, in and of themselves, DO NOT directly correlate to a numeric grade. They should only be converted to a numeric grade when a student has demonstrated sufficient mastery of skills or, if the student fails to demonstrate such mastery by a relevant deadline that will be determined by the DOE.
