Let’s use inclusive language

New York Teacher

I want to bring up something that’s been on my mind and honestly really bothers me: When I hear “boys and girls” being used in the classroom or see students being asked to line up or sit based on their gender. I’ve known kids, even as young as age 5, who don’t identify as either a boy or a girl, and when we group them like that, we’re sending a message that those are the only two options. It’s an old-school way of thinking and doesn’t reflect the world we live in today, or the students we serve.

We can do better by using inclusive language, like “everyone” or “students,” or just calling them by name. These small shifts can have a huge impact on making every kid feel seen and respected. I really believe we owe them that.
