Making a cellphone ban work

New York Teacher

We are going on year five using the Yondr-and-collect method at my middle school in the Bronx with about 350 children. We had small challenges in the first couple of years until we ironed out our system. Students come into homeroom, grab their pouch, put their phone, earpods or smartwatches inside, and put the pouch inside the bucket that’s collected by the grade liaisons at the end of homeroom and taken to a locked closet. At the end of the day, under adult supervision, student leaders unlock the pouches. As students head out for dismissal, they grab their phones from the class bucket and leave behind the pouch. Rarely do we have issues anymore since it’s an expected part of the school culture.
