Teacher Union Day 2025
About 1,700 UFT members, families and friends gathered at the New York Hilton on Nov. 2, 2025, to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the 1960 strike that won collective bargaining rights for UFT members. At the union’s annual Teacher Union Day event, more than 250 individual members and chapters were honored for their exceptional work and longtime service to the union’s mission, including the members of the UFT Health Care Committee and the Occupational and Physical Therapists Chapter.
Members from IS 93 and IS 61, both in Queens, are among some 1,700 members and attendees to gather at the New York Hilton Midtown for Teacher Union Day.
The ballroom at the Hilton is filled to capacity during Teacher Union Day’s celebration of members’ achievements.
Chapter Leader Elkis Felice (second left) of PS 28 in Manhattan’s Hamilton Heights is cheered by colleagues. The Ely Trachtenberg Award-winner was honored for creating and nurturing unionism in her chapter.
The union confers the Jules Kolodny Award on the 50-member UFT Health Care Committee for their leadership and commitment in helping the UFT secure a new city health plan that locks in premium-free care for the next five years.

Mulgrew opens Teacher Union Day by praising members for their work in accomplishing recent victories like the statewide, bell-to-bell cellphone ban and the push for smaller class sizes, and speaks of the ongoing battles ahead, including the paraprofessional “RESPECT check” and Fix Tier 6 campaigns.
UFT Secretary LeRoy Barr speaks to the union’s strengths emanating from its members’ ability to come together as he wins the Charles Cogen Award, the union’s highest honor, given to a veteran leader for outstanding service.
Barr is surrounded by well-wishers after receiving the Charles Cogen Award.
