Special education teachers and providers for these services must serve each student as mandated and may not be assigned to other duties (like exam scoring or coverage/proctoring for other classes) that would prevent them from doing so, except in extraordinary circumstances.

PLEASE NOTE: The “Application For Age 26 Young Adult Coverage” form is no longer required by the UFT Welfare Fund. Members wishing to add a dependent under age 26 to their Welfare Fund coverage at no cost should use the Welfare Fund’s online Update Your Information (Change of Status) form.
If you have performed SESIS-related activities at home because you have been directed to do so, you can file a grievance within thirty (30) school days from the time you were instructed to perform the activity.

This Special Education Complaint form tracks trends and facilitates problem solving around special education issues. Once we receive the complaint, a member of the union’s special education staff will review it.
This memo clarifies the required participation of general and special education teachers at CSE meetings. As described on pp.70–72 of the SOPM, a required CSE (IEP team) member may be excused from all or part of an IEP meeting, other than an initial IEP meeting, only if the parent consents to the member’s absence in writing.
The Continuum of Services for Students with Disabilities
The Special Education Standard Operating Procedures Manual (SOPM) has been substantially revised in September 2017, and supersedes the 2009 SOPM. The SOPM is a “living” resource that will be updated on an ongoing basis to best serve New York City students and families.
