Union offers new tool to help members track their pay

UFT Salary Checkup ensures educators’ just due

Curious if you’re being paid what you deserve?

Check out the UFT Salary Checkup in the UFT Member Hub. This new online resource helps teachers, paraprofessionals and members in several other school-based titles confirm that their paychecks are accurate. Launched in April, the tool guides users through a series of questions about their experience, years of service and education to determine whether the Department of Education is paying them at the correct rate. If there’s a discrepancy between what a member should be earning and what appears on their paycheck, the tool directs them to contact the UFT for help resolving the issue with the DOE and, if necessary, filing a salary grievance.

The UFT Salary Checkup is the brainchild of UFT staffer Benjamin Rothfeld, a former teacher and UFT member who saw firsthand how challenging it could be to navigate DOE salary information.

“DOE salaries can be complicated, especially for our new members,” said UFT Assistant Secretary Mike Sill, the union’s director of personnel, payroll and special projects. “The salary checkup tool is another way that our members can make sure they are being paid correctly for their work.”

Members in the following titles can use the tool: teachers (not CTE), paraprofessionals, school counselors, school social workers and psychologists, lab specialists, school secretaries, and adult education teachers.

A member’s salary depends on a combination of some or all of these factors:

  • Pay raises negotiated in the DOE-UFT contract
  • Step increases and longevity increments
  • Relevant prior work experience
  • Educational credits and degrees

The union is already working on enhancements that will enable the tool to project members’ future salary, including increases for time served, academic credits and union-negotiated pay increases.
