‘Thank you,’ LeRoy Barr

New York Teacher

Regarding the recent retirement of LeRoy Barr as UFT secretary and director of staff:

LeRoy Barr brought me back into this union at the hardest time of my life. He had faith in me, he mentored me, he guided me, he consistently teaches me — explicitly and implicitly. I learned about social justice. He helped me to be a stronger communicator. He allowed me to understand the power of words, the power of working collectively, and to tap into my own power. I could go on, but truthfully, no words would be adequate to express my feelings about this man. I’ll just say, “Thank you” (on behalf of myself and everyone in this union!) and wish him a well-deserved retirement from the UFT, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

He was one of the finest individuals I came across when I taught at PS 154, starting in 1999. Mr. Barr came to my classroom door regularly to check on me and give moral support and advice. He offered great support and help when I retired by first taking terminal leave in March of that year.

LeRoy always rallied the troops! He made us feel that our presence and voice mattered. LeRoy also had that personal touch and he made me laugh. Thank you for your devotion and commitment. Who are we? UFT!
