Don’t make Regents optional
When any test is made mandatory for graduation, it usually reaches for the lowest common denominator. If scores on such tests are “influenced by a student’s income, cultural differences or other obstacles,” the solution is not to eliminate such tests, but to put resources into those schools where students need the help.
Hexagonal thinking article resonated
I enjoyed Sarah Kuhner’s Teacher to Teacher column headlined “Make connections with hexagonal thinking” [Nov. 2].

Help for students by the book
Response to the UFT giving out 40,000 books at PS 154 in Harlem on Sept. 23: In a world where so many places are trying to ban books, it’s beautiful to see us giving them away.

Congrats on the new contract
As a retiree (still can’t believe I’m saying that — I sang at a nursing home and was older than a few there), I just wanted to congratulate the union on its well-deserved contract gains. We are all a part of a big family of educators and dedicated decent people whose influence and worth can often last generations.
