With the current DOE-UFT contract set to expire on Nov. 28, 2027, the UFT Contract Negotiating Committee will convene for the first time in June to connect members and begin charting the union’s strategy for negotiating the next contract.
The Contract Negotiating Committee, which was composed of 400 members for the 2018 contract and 500 members for the 2022–2027 contract, will grow to over 600 members for the next contract.
At the April Delegate Assembly, UFT delegates approved a resolution that called upon the UFT to survey all DOE-employed members about their priorities in the upcoming contract negotiations and also to survey the members in each individual bargaining unit to learn their needs and priorities. The survey will be conducted in the fall.
These online contract surveys in the previous bargaining round resulted in demands for bargaining that reflected what is most important to members. This ultimately led to agreements with significant wins on pay and bonuses and gave educators more say over how and where they spend their out-of-classroom time, all with no givebacks.
The resolution also called for a negotiating committee to be formed immediately to allow adequate time to properly train members on collective bargaining. Those selected members, who represent all divisions, boroughs, and bargaining units, will meet in June.
The Contract Negotiating Committee’s first fall meeting will be in September.
