Pay therapists promptly

New York Teacher

Responding to “Demanding what they’re owed” (June 17 issue):

It would seem fair to expect prompt compensation for occupational and physical therapists when the DOE-UFT contract provides annual reimbursement for professional development expenses of $1,864 as of Jan. 18, 2025, and $1,925 as of Sept. 14, 2025, as well as travel expenses when working in multiple schools. Yet, over my 10 years at the DOE, reimbursements have become increasingly difficult to receive in a reasonable timeframe (up to 11 months) without multiple emails (up to 45), resubmissions and interest on late credit-card payments while I wait.

The state Education Department requires 36 continuing education unit hours every three years to maintain OT and PT licenses. We therapists work in education; therefore, continuing education would seem integral for ensuring the best therapy is provided to our students.

When I received a check in the mail in June, exactly two months from the date of submission for my last professional development conference, it was truly a relief — no additional submissions or reaching out to get the process expedited or feeling like I would have to beg for monies owed to me. Thank you to Thomas Ayrovainen, the leader of the UFT Occupational and Physical Therapists Chapter, and the UFT. Here’s to the UFT continuing to demand even more prompt payments for professional development and travel reimbursements in the 2025–26 school year!
