Resolution in support of Jamaica in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa
WHEREAS, on October 28, 2025, Hurricane Melissa made landfall in the Caribbean, causing widespread devastation in Jamaica, including loss of life, destruction of homes, schools, and infrastructure, and the displacement of thousands of residents; and
WHEREAS, the people of Jamaica, including students, educators, and school communities, have been severely impacted by the storm and face urgent needs related to housing, education, healthcare, and basic supplies; and
WHEREAS, many UFT members have family and community ties to Jamaica, and the values of international solidarity, humanitarian aid, and social justice are central to the mission of the United Federation of Teachers; and
WHEREAS, the UFT has a long history of standing in solidarity with communities affected by natural disasters, including in Puerto Rico, Haiti, and the Gulf Coast, and actively participates in relief efforts through the Disaster Relief Fund; therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the United Federation of Teachers expresses its deepest sympathy and solidarity with the people of Jamaica in the wake of Hurricane Melissa, especially with students, educators, and their families who have been displaced or harmed by the disaster; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the UFT will work with local and international partners to support humanitarian relief efforts in Jamaica, including through donations to reputable relief organizations and the UFT Disaster Relief Fund; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the UFT will encourage its members to contribute to relief efforts and will share information on how to assist through official union communications and social media; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the UFT will initiate a collection drive of non-perishable food items, toiletries, and new or gently used children’s clothing, in coordination with community partners and local relief organizations, to be delivered to affected areas in Jamaica; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the UFT will advocate for aid to support Jamaica’s recovery and will continue to stand in solidarity with all communities affected by disasters around the world.
