Farewell to a devoted unionist and friend

New York Teacher
George Altomare

George Altomare

Response to the death of UFT founder and former vice president George Altomare:

I was in my first year teaching in 1985 when I first met George and began my volunteer work with the art teachers’ professional committee. I spent hours listening to his stories of the early days and formation of the UFT. My own activism and dedication to our union is directly related to George.

George was a mentor, leader and friend and, while we knew it was coming, it feels like I have lost my own father. George’s vision and commitment to professional committees is something we should never forget or compromise. On behalf of the entire executive board of the New York City Art Teachers Association/UFT, we send our condolences.

100% unionist — always! He was also a great supporter of César Chávez and the United Farm Workers. He’s left a tremendous void.

A great loss. The UFT is better for having had George among us. Condolences to his family and all those lucky enough to call him friend.

R.I.P., founder of our union. My condolences to the family. I will miss your song “Solidarity Forever” at the end of our conventions, George.
