The Delegate Assembly approved three resolutions at its March 20 meeting, held both in person in Shanker Hall and via telephone.
The delegates approved a resolution in support of New York City paraprofessionals’ fight for a living wage and better benefits. It called on the UFT to educate its members about the 2023 U.S. Senate resolution called the Paraprofessionals and Education Support Staff Bill of Rights, which calls for fairer pay, better benefits, workplace safety, job security and increased access to training, and the legislation before the U.S. Congress called the Preparing and Retaining All (PARA) Educators Act, which would establish a grant program to help schools recruit, train and retain paraprofessionals by funding pipeline and credentialing programs, high-quality professional development and higher wages.
The delegates also overwhelmingly approved the following two resolutions:
- To acknowledge the work of the union’s founders on the UFT’s 64th anniversary on March 16 and to continue the mission to preserve public education and protect workers’ rights.
- To honor the impact that women have had on the union in recognition of Women’s History Month.
A resolution to endorse Christina McGrath for election to the New York City Teachers’ Retirement Board was the lone measure voted on and passed at the Feb. 7 Delegate Assembly.
