Chapter Leader Lillian Crespo leads a presentation about the UFT’s Fix Tier 6 pension campaign to members at PS 216 in Brooklyn.

Chapter leaders have taken the Delegate Assembly’s Fix Tier 6 presentation on the road. Chapter Leader Lillian Crespo at PS 216 in Gravesend, Brooklyn, and her UFT district representative, Adam Shapiro, showed it to PS 216 members at a Jan. 22 chapter meeting.

When the pair got to the slide about the campaign’s goal to enable Tier 6 members to retire with an unreduced pension at age 55 after 30 years of service, PS 216 members started clapping.

Crespo, who is in her 18th year at the school, said she appealed to veteran educators to join the fight to improve the pension benefits of newer members, who belong to Tier 6. She saw that solidarity as a form of paying it forward.

“I was a new teacher when Tier 4 was changing and Tier 1 members helped me, and that’s why I’m still here and doing this job,” she said.

Crespo’s members responded enthusiastically to the presentation, signing up for the campaign and donating to COPE. Several asked to participate in the union’s Lobby Day in Albany on March 11.

“We just feel like if we stand together, the changes to Tier 6 can be a possibility, because we want these teachers to stay,” Crespo said.
