Mayor Adams must protect children’s right to shelter
The United Federation of Teachers is calling on Mayor Adams to abandon his administration’s plans to evict children and their parents from the city’s emergency shelters after 60 days.
"New York City cannot toss children out on the street in the middle of winter," said UFT President Michael Mulgrew. "Our asylum seekers have endured great trauma getting here. The city public schools have welcomed them. Educators have built trust with their new students, and have made schools a secure, consistent force in the children’s lives."
"The Mayor’s eviction policy will disrupt that trust by forcing newcomers to reapply for emergency shelter beds every 60 days or find alternative housing. It is a policy that makes a difficult situation more chaotic and increases the likelihood of our students and their families winding up on the streets," Mulgrew said.
The family policy was announced on October 16, 2023.
The UFT, community groups, and non-profits have launched a petition calling on Mayor Adams to abandon the policy.
