On Aug. 24, 2020, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that New York City public schools could begin to consider plans for outdoor classrooms as they prepare to return to in-person learning in school buildings in the fall of 2020. 

In response, UFT President Michael Mulgrew issued the following statement: 

The mayor's reopening plan continues to fall short, particularly in terms of necessary testing.
